National Service Scheme

Swami Vivekananda aptly said, “To serve mankind is to serve god”. It teaches us that god has given us a direct way to communicate with him by serving the people around us. Every human being has hidden characteristics of being selfish. Nowadays it is rare to see a selfless person with full of sacrifice like Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa who have thought us to keep service before self. They dedicated their life to work for the welfare of the needful people throughout their lives. They were not only the role models but also the real source of inspiration for the coming generation.
Expectation always results in disappointment, better render services without expecting anything in return, that will definitely take us to the heaven. Every individual should voluntarily offer his/her service for the betterment of the society at the required moment of time without expecting reciprocal reward or award.
In this fast moving competitive world youth has ample challenge in every walk of their life. They totally forget their responsibility towards society & county, even to the family. Everyone should have a clear vision and prior planning before applying their wisdom in to every action. Contribute at least a little to the society before your last breath. Prepare your young minds to serve for the community and fulfill all your dreams through a National Service Scheme.
“Spare your Leisure
    To serve our nation”

Let’s join our hands to have better tomorrow.
                                                                   Dr. T. Umapathy M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.
                        NSS Programme Officer

HISTORY OF N.S.S
Ever since independence there has been growing Awareness of the desirability of involving students in National Service Scheme the First Education Commission (1950) recommended the introduction of National Service by students on a voluntary basis. Subsequently on the basis of suggestion made by the Prime Minister Pt. Jawharlal Nehru, a committee was appointed under the chairmanship of Dr. C.D. Deshmukh to prepare a scheme for compulsory National Service by students prior to their admission for degree courses. Prof.K.G.Saiyidain who undertook a study of National Service by youth in several countries recommended that National Service may be introduced on a voluntary basis a similar recommendation was made by the Education Commission appointed under the Chairmanship of Dr.D.S.Kothari.
In April, 1967 the conference of State Education Ministers recommended that at the University stage, students could be permitted to join the Nation Cadet Corps which was already in existence on a voluntary basis and an alternative to this could be offered to them in the form of a new programme called the National Service Scheme (NSS).  Promising sportsmen however should be exempted from both and allowed to join another Scheme called the National Sport Organization (NSO), in view of the need to give priority to the development of sport and athletics.
The Conference of Vice-Chancellors in September 1967 welcomed this recommendation and suggested that a special committee of Vice-Chancellors should be set up to examine this question in details. The details were soon worked out and the Planning commission sanctioned an outlay of Rs.5 Crore for developing the NSS during the 4th Five Year Plan as pilot project in selected institutions and universities. In pursuance of these recommendations, the Ministry of Education introduced the National Service Scheme during 1969-70. The choice of the timing of its introduction was remarkably suspicious as 1969 was the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our Nation to whom Social Service was almost a religion.
The response of students to the Scheme has been excellent. Starting with an enrolment of 40,000 students in 1969, the coverage of NSS Students has increased every year. Now over 32 lacs students have joined NSS in current year.
The Scheme now extends to all the states and universities in the country. Students, teachers, parents, guardians, persons in authority in governments, universities and colleges and the people in general now realize the need and significance of NSS. It has aroused among the student’s youths an awareness of the realities of life, a better understanding and appreciation of the problem of the people. NSS is, thus a concrete attempt in making Education relevant to the needs of the society. NSS comes under the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department in the year 1997. NSS was aligned with directorate of Collegiate Education. Thereafter Directorate of Collegiate Education was the State Coordinator for NSS.
NSS MOTTO
The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This Express the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other man’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole. Therefore it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day to day programme.
NSS SYMBOL
The symbol of the Nation Service Scheme, as appearing on the cover is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. These giant wheels the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation preservation and release and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, simplified from of the Sun-chariot wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies on the part of the NSS for continuous striving forward for social transformation and upliftment.
NSS BADGE
The N.S.S symbol is embossed on N.S.S. Badge. N.S.S. volunteers wear it while undertaking various community programmes of community service. There are 24 wheels in ‘Rath’ of  Sun Temple of Konark. Each wheel has eight bars, which represents 8 pahars of day.Hence the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours or 8 pahars. The red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood, i.e. lively, active and spirited. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

QUALITIES OF GOOD LEADER
The competitiveness, well disciplined, honesty, etc are some leadership qualities which make the person stand out in the crowd. Just being a good visionary is a thing of yesteryear! Today effective leadership includes lot more than just being a good visionary a good orator. Listed below are some of the must have qualities of a leader a good leader to be precise.
Communication Skill:
Effective Communication Skill is undoubtedly the most important leadership traits to excel in any field. The person shouldn’t just have ideas, but should also sport the means of communicating these ideas across the table in an effective manner.
Competency:
A person thriving to become a good leader should be competent enough to take on any odds. Decision making matters, and decisions should be purely based on rational thinking instead of emotions. Giving up is a sign of weak leadership, which doesn’t just affect the individual but also tends to hamper the morale of the team.
Honesty:
One of the most important qualities in the leadership qualities list is honesty. The person has to be honest to himself, his team as well as his goals. Deceit will only call for ire from the team and this will in turn affect6 the output of the team.
Intelligence:
Intelligence is bound to reflect on the performance of the individual as well as the team he is leading. Being well updated about the ongoing trends can turn out to be an added advantage, especially when it comes to opportunities of climbing the hierarchy ladder.
Discipline:
Laid back attitude is mean for losers, not leaders. Discipline in both professional as well as personal life is one of the best leadership qualities a person can include within himself. It is also one of the simplest measures to achieve success in various walks of life.
Courageous:
A successful person is the one who takes a calculated risk where other back off. The leader should be courageous enough to identify opportunities and strike gold whenever possible. At the same time, he has to raise the bar and always thrive for better.

Goal Oriented:
A good leader needs to be a good visionary. He should be able to set long goals and more importantly implement all the measures required to achieve these goals. In leadership, achievements do matter and the bigger they are the better.
Inspiring:
A good leader motivates his follo9wer and team to achieve the next best things. He should be inspiring, in fact a person worth idolizing for his team, his words as well as his action to motivate the people around him.
Broad Minded:
Being broad minded can help the leader to keep calm even in rough times. He should be open for ideas and suggestions, even if they come from his juniors. Unnecessary hassles and ego problems should be strictly avoided.
Consistent:
Consistency is yet another important leadership trait which makes the person stand out in the crowd. Once in a while profits don’t matter to an organization as much as long gains do. Consistency for  sufficient period can ensure these long term gains.
Dedication:
A good leader is always dedicated to his team as well as his work. He democrats a proper difference between his professional and personal life. The aim should always be to perform better than the last time, whilst staying focused on the particular goal.
Humor:
Although not one of the popular leadership characteristics, humor is perhaps by far the best way to relive stress as well as to counter hostility. A good leader should know how to use humor to boost the morale of team and solve conflicts within the team.

 YOUTH SONG
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome some day,
O, deep in my heart
I do believe that

We shall overcome some day.
We’ll walk hand in hand,
We’ll walk hand in hand,
We’ll walk hand in hand some day
O, deep in my heart
I do believe that

We shall overcome some day.
We shall live in peace.
We shall live in peace some day,
O, deep in my heart
I do believe that

We shall overcome some day
We are not afraid
 We are not afraid to-day,
 O, deep in my heart
I do believe that
We shall overcome some day.

Meaning of NSS Song
Wake up for the society, wake up wake up
Awaken yourself for freedom, awaken awaken
Lets beautify ourselves and lets beautify the earth

We will wake up and along with us the entire world will wake up friends
If we go ahead everybody will also come along ahead with us dear friends
On earth we will bring down the sky

We shall distance away sorrow and shall share happiness
We shall throw away the differences between villages and cities
We shall preach knowledge and spread it
We shall preach science and spread it
Lets beautify ourselves and lets beautify the earth

Let children, elders and ladies be there always
Let the earth always wear the shawl of green forest
Let there be new ideas to reach the peak
Lets beautify ourselves and lets beautify the earth

Let caste, dharma and languages not become the thorns on our road
Lets grow the creeper of love forever
With our imagination lets decorate this earth
With our good thinking lets decorate this earth
Lets beautify ourselves and lets beautify the earth
